Learn: Establishing the System

Stability begins with structure.

The Learn Phase establishes the foundation of the LRRP(S) Program. Here, Veterans begin by studying the system of Combat-Related Post-Trauma Syndrome (CRPTS), not as a disorder, but as an operational pattern that can be understood, stabilized, and redesigned.

This first phase is about containment before expression. Participants learn to regulate, observe, and rebuild the framework that supports creative control.

Phase 1:

LEARN

Understanding the System

Combat-Related Post-Trauma Syndrome (CRPTS) teaches that trauma is not a singular event but a disruption of internal systems: physical, emotional, and cognitive. In the Learn Phase, Veterans explore how these systems can be observed and reorganized through discipline and structure.

They are not asked to feel or confess but to map and measure. By identifying their operational responses, they establish the first layer of stability required for creation.

Technical Foundations

LRRP(S) uses artistic and narrative design as tools of reconstruction. Participants begin structured learning across three integrated tracks:

1. CRPTS Fundamentals: Awareness of physiological and psychological patterns under stress, creating containment and the identification of personal triggers without judgement.

2. Storytelling Fundamentals: Basics of story structure, rhythm, and logic, to teach that meaning and control can be rebuilt through organizaed narrative.

3. Drawing Fundamentals:  Visual Fundamentals of line, proportion, shape, and flow by using design repetition as a stabilizing act of focus and precision.

Each track reinforces the others. Containment is mirrored in rhythm. Structure replaces chaos. The body, the story, and the drawing become systems of control.

Learning through Containment

Every session follows a four-step process to ensure safety and predictability:

  1. Video-Based Instructiondelivered with clarity and calm tone.
  2. Demonstrationshowing structure before expression.
  3. Execution:   timed, measurable creative task.
  4. Reflectionfactual review focused on rhythm and composure.

This rhythm of learning replaces volatility with steady repetition, which is a pattern that retrains the system toward stability.

Phase Integration

The Learn Phase sets the tone for every phase that follows. Through repetition and precision, participants begin to see themselves not as reactive, but as regulated, capable of deliberate creation.

“Containment is not suppression. It is readiness.”

Outcome Summary

At the completion of the Learn Phase, participants demonstrate:

  • Composure under structure: The ability to engage creative exercises without destabilization.
  • Cognitive rhythm: Improved focus and tolerance for routine creative practice.

Operational awareness: Recognition of their own system responses and capacity for controlled authorship.

Tools Used in Phase 1:

  • Pencil, paper, erasers, and straight edge (traditional tools only)

  • Downloadable worksheets and visual practice sheets

  • Private, self-paced learning modules via the CSF Website

  • Optional access to a community space for connection (no sharing required)

Message  from Command and Signal's Executive Director: Jonathan Weiler

"In the military, everything we did was built on Fundamentals"...

...whether it was marksmanship, mission planning, or even just showing up on time in the proper uniform. That structure gave us confidence and purpose. The same applies here.

This first phase isn’t about making you an artist or writer overnight. It’s about giving you the creative foundation to express yourself clearly and purposefully.

I will never ask you to relive your trauma. That’s not what this is. But I do believe that by acknowledging what we’ve been through, and putting it into our own words or images, we can start to understand our trauma and how it controls us.

So, pick up a pencil, write down a thought, sketch an idea. You can do it, and you can do it well.

CRPTS Framework Disclaimer:

CRPTS, or Combat-Related Post Trauma Syndrome, is a peer-developed field framework created to describe a common operating-state pattern observed in some direct-action Combat Veterans, including its effects on physiology, identity, relationships, and daily functioning.

CRPTS does not replace clinical diagnosis. PTSD remains an important recognized diagnosis for identifying trauma-related symptoms and establishing clinical care.

CSF does not provide medical or mental health diagnosis, therapy, or crisis treatment. LRRP(S) is a peer-led educational and community pipeline centered on disciplined creative practice, structured self-observation, and long-term reorganization.
